The testosterone production mechanism
The hypothalamus, the area situated in the center of the brain, representing less than 1% of the total volume, is located above the pituitary gland. It has the dual role of controlling hormonal secretions from the pituitary gland (considered the "master gland" of the body). In the process of testosterone production, the hypothalamus secretes a hormone called GNRH which is transformed into LH in the pituitary. LH is transported in the bloodstream to LEYDIG cells, situated in the testicles and stimulating testosterone production. Released in the blood, testosterone will increase physical manifestations of virility (muscle mass, energy, etc.) as well as acting on the libido and on sperm production.
A large part of unreleased testosterone is converted into estrogens by an enzyme called aromatase, with many negative consequences (increase of fat mass, hypertrophy of the mammary glands, or gynecomastia).
After age 40, testosterone production decreases, aromatase increases (drop in free testosterone), which leads to libido problems and erectile dysfunction.
